How net salary is calculated
- Social insurance (sociálne poistenie) 9.4%: sickness 1.4% (§ 130 of Act No. 461/2003 Coll.), old-age 4% (§ 131), disability 3% (§ 132) and unemployment insurance 1% (§ 136) of the gross salary, on at most €16,764 a month (§ 138(9)). Each amount is rounded down to the cent (§ 129(2)).
- Health insurance (zdravotné poistenie) 5% of the whole gross salary, no cap; 2.5% for a person with a disability (§ 12(1) of Act No. 580/2004 Coll.). Rounded down to the cent (§ 16(1)).
- Tax base (základ dane) = gross salary minus this insurance (§ 5(8) of Act No. 595/2003 Coll. on income tax).
- Non-taxable allowance (nezdaniteľná časť základu dane): with a signed declaration the employer deducts €497.23 a month, 1/12 of €5,966.73 (§ 11(2) and § 35(1)(b)). The result is the taxable salary.
- Income tax advance (preddavok na daň): 19% of the taxable salary up to €3,665.28, 25% of the part up to €5,029.10, 30% of the part up to €6,250.86 and 35% of the part above it (§ 35(2), rates in § 15(a)). Each band is rounded to the cent (§ 47).
- Child tax bonus (daňový bonus): €100 per child under 15 and €50 per child aged 15 to 18 (§ 33(1)), at most 29% of the tax base with one child up to 64% with six (§ 33(6)). Above a tax base of €2,286 (1.5 times the average wage for 2024) the bonus for each child drops by 1/10 of the amount over that line (§ 33(11), § 35(5)). The bonus comes off the tax advance; if it is larger, the employer pays you the difference.
- Net salary = gross salary − insurance − tax advance + child tax bonus.

Frequently asked questions
How is net salary calculated in Slovakia in 2026?
The employee’s insurance comes off the gross salary first: 9.4% social and 5% health insurance, 14.4% in all. What is left is the tax base. With a signed declaration, the employer takes the non-taxable allowance of €497.23 a month off it and works out the income tax advance: 19% up to €3,665.28, 25% up to €5,029.10, 30% up to €6,250.86 and 35% above that. The child tax bonus then lowers the tax.
What is the net salary from €1,500 gross in 2026?
With a signed declaration and no children, €1,134.51 a month. Insurance is €216.00 (social €141.00, health €75.00) and the tax advance €149.49. With one child under 15 you get €1,234.51.
What is the minimum wage in Slovakia in 2026, and what is it net?
The minimum wage (minimálna mzda) is €915 a month in 2026 (€5.259 an hour). Net, that is €728.90: insurance €131.76 and tax advance €54.34.
What is the declaration (vyhlásenie) and why does it matter?
A form you sign with your employer (with one employer only, if you have several jobs). Only then does the employer deduct the non-taxable allowance and pay the child tax bonus every month. Without it, the same €1,500 gross pays €243.96 tax instead of €149.49. You can claim the difference after the year ends, in your tax return.
How much insurance does an employee pay?
14.4% of the gross salary: sickness insurance 1.4%, old-age 4%, disability 3%, unemployment insurance 1% and health insurance 5% (2.5% for a person with a disability). Social insurance is paid on at most €16,764 a month; health insurance has no cap.
What is the child tax bonus (daňový bonus) in 2026?
€100 a month for each child under 15 and €50 for each child aged 15 to 18; older children get none since 2025. The bonus is limited to a share of the tax base (29% with one child, 36% with two and so on), and above a tax base of €2,286 a month it drops by a tenth of the amount over that line for each child.
How do I work out the gross salary for a net amount?
Switch the calculator to “the net salary” and enter what you want on your account. It finds the lowest gross salary that pays at least that much net. For example, €1,000 net needs €1,305.95 gross.

What the calculator leaves out
- It works out one ordinary month with one employer. The annual tax settlement (ročné zúčtovanie) can come out differently: with a yearly tax base above €26,083.13 the non-taxable allowance is lower, and an allowance for a spouse, supplementary pension savings or the health insurance deduction (§ 13a of Act No. 580/2004 Coll., applied only in the annual health insurance settlement) may be added.
- It doesn’t cover work agreements outside an employment contract (dohody), people drawing an old-age or disability pension (different insurance), the minimum health insurance advance on a very low salary, or income that isn’t part of the assessment base.
- It counts the child tax bonus for a whole month and only for the employee who claims it (of two parents, only one can).
- It assumes you are insured and pay tax in Slovakia. If you work across borders or are tax resident elsewhere, check your situation with the tax office (daňový úrad) or an adviser.
